Washing Your Hands

This is a reading comprehension about washing your hands. Washing your hands help to get rid of all the dirt and germs. Did you know that you should wash your hands as long as it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” slowly? I never knew that but when I read this reading comprehension I learn’t something new. The questions were really simple. I have got all the questions correct. I will try to find a more difficult reading comprehension game next time.

Evaluating

This is a  reading comprehension game about evaluating. It is fun and it helps me to learn at the same time. Evaluating means making a judgement about what you read, and explaining why. The questions were easy and simple because I have got all the questions correct. Maybe next time I can a much more difficult reading comprehension game.

Synthesizing

This reading comprehension is about Synthesizing. Synthesizing means learning from what you read and adding new ideas to what you already know. The questions were not difficult or too easy. However I still need to practise synthesizing. Hopefully I will learn how to synthesize so I can find a more complicated reading comprehension game.

Our First Manaiakalani Movie

This year we made our very first Manaiakalani movie. It was all about leaving positive blog comments. We got the idea from Mrs.Yollis’ class all the way from California. Her class’s video gave us lots of ideas on how to make the movie. Her video was a US version so we decided to make a NZ version. We made it because we wanted to teach people all around the world how to leave positive blog comments. Comments that would be meaningful for the blog writer. My favourite part about the movie was when we could all write signs about positive blog comments. My sign said “Positive Digital Footprint.” At first we didn’t know to leave positive blog comments too but later on when we all tried and believed in ourselves we soon got there. It was challenging and lots of fun at the same time. I found it challenging because this was our first movie. At the beginning of the year we didn't know much about blogging and commenting. We have practised a lot and because there were lots of things for us to share we  have learn’t a lot over the year. At the end we were all proud of ourselves and hoped that people will learn from our movie.

Struggle for Survival

We have been learning to read more challenging comprehension. I have learnt lots of technical vocabs from this story like predators, invaders, rivals and breeding. In this short and simple report there were lots of interesting facts about animals. The questions were simple and fun at the same time. I have got most of the questions correct. Next time I will try to read the story again and hopefully I can get all the questions correct and maybe I can try to use some of the words to make my story interesting.

Thinking blocks

This game is called thinking blocks. It is all about fractions. A fraction is a part of a whole. I now have learned how to solve fractions using division. I found it ok but it was still difficult because you have to really know how to divide all numbers. I have got most of the questions correct. Next time I will try to finish it faster and confidently. Hopefully I can find a much easier fraction game.

My Father

My Father
Dad , you have helped me through all my life
Without you my life would have never begun
You take care of all your family members,
your daughters and favourite son

Anything that is not working
you can always fix it
and you can do different
kinds of tricks

We can always rely on you
day and night
and you always do
everything right

We have many memories together
good and bad
I see in the heart
that you are my dad

When I ask for something
you always get it straight away
                        and you never ever say
                               “No way”

You play with everyone
and you always brighten their days
No matter what it is
you always say “Okay”.

So now I just want to say
how much I love you
and sorry
for all the trouble I gave you

Robber's In The Night

Robber’s In The Night.
Bzzzt! Bzzzt! Quacky's door alarm was ringing. It was as loud as a horn. In his mind he was saying “ Okay, Okay. I’m going to open the door!” He opened the door peacefully. He didn't even know who it was because he was so sleepy. “Who would come in the middle of the night to my apartment?” He asked himself. He rushed to the door and opened it angrily. There was nobody there and so Quacky went back to bed. He was so sleepy that he forgot to lock the door. The mystery people knew that Quacky had gone back to sleep. So they sneaked inside Quacky’s house.

By the time the mystery people came, Quacky had already fell asleep. His pet robot, Bemo saw the robbers entering the house. The two tricky robbers demanded Bemo that where is all your jewelry, gems, treasure and money. Bemo pointed to a secret room. He didn't know what he was doing, because he was so sleepy. And so the two robbers rushed to the secret room as fast as cheetahs.

They had both found a huge baggy bag full of shiny treasure. They were both proud of themselves and sleepy at the same time. The robbers thanked Bemo a thousand times. When the two tricky robbers had got the cash and everything, Quacky started to wake up. He thought it was a silly dream, so he fell back asleep.

The robbers had everything they wanted. They quietly tip toed back to their homes and vanished.

Quacky was fast asleep snoring away and Bemo was just  lying on his bed wondering about his silly dream. In Bemo’s mind he was saying “Is this a dream or is this true?” “Cause if this is true then my life is ruined.” He was saying this in his mind till morning. What a silly duck he was!

Rheumatic Fever

Rheumatic Fever
Rheumatic Fever is a very serious illness here in New Zealand. It affects mostly Māori and Pacific children and adults, aged 4-19 years. It is an illness which starts with streptococcal infection.
What can Rheumatic fever lead to?
Few weeks after the infection with the ‘strep bug’ it can develop other symptoms such as sore throats, swollen joints, a skin rash, a fever, stomach pain and jerky movements. Each attack of rheumatic fever may cause permanent damage to their heart valves. This is called rheumatic heart disease which will lead you to have regular penicillin injections up to ten years.

How can Rheumatic Fever affect your heart?
Each attack of rheumatic fever may cause permanent damage to your heart valves. This is called rheumatic heart disease where the heart valves act like a one-way door. That means the blood pumped by the heart flows one direction only. When the heart valve is damaged the blood can leak and may cause breathless and tiredness. When you get Rheumatic Fever you might end up staying in hospital for about two weeks, but it sometimes takes longer if your heart is affected.

So remember,  if you have a sore throat, you need to check with your family doctor as soon as you can before it is too late.

Healthy Skin

Healthy Skin
1. What is Skin?
Skin is the soft outering covering of vertebrates that is all over our body. Skin has three basic layers and each layer has a different job. The dermis is the deepest layer and is responsible for making new skin cells. The hypodermis is a middle layer of maturing cells and the epidermis is the outer-most, superficial skin layer and the only one of the skin layers that sheds, or sloughs off, dead cells. Skin is all over our body.

2. What are 5 important things that our skin does?
It holds our body together. It stops germs and dirt from getting into the body. It can tell you when you have been hurt. (Pain)

3. How many layers does our skin have?
Skin has two layers and each layer has a different job. The outer layer is called the epidermis and the inner layer is called the dermis.

4. What is epidermis?
Epidermis is the outside layer. The epidermis makes the cells which are on the outside of the skin. Deep in the epidermis are growing cells, and on the outside of this are flat, dead skin cells.

5. What is dermis?
Dermis is a thicker layer and a more elastic (stretchy) layer.
In this layer are: glands, hair follicles, nerves  and blood vessels.

6. How thick is our skin?
Skin is not the same thickness all over your body. On most of our body the skin is around 22 mm. On the soles of your feet it much thicker, while on our eyelids it is only 0.5mm thick.

7. Why is the skin on the soles of our feet so thick?
Because that it needs to be the strongest. Our feet endure extreme forces when we walk and run and jump, so our feet get worn and tough.

8. Why is the skin on the palm of our hands firmer than the skin on the back of our hands?
The skin on the palms of our hands needs to be firm as we use our hands to grasp things with.

In Ten Years Time

In Ten Years Time
In ten years time, I would like to own my own house. By owning my own house, I can start saving more money in  my bank account faster and better. By starting at this age to save more money in my bank account, by doing the chores in the house and outside obediently, and also by selling and trading the things I don’t need, I can own my own house in no time. I tremoundsley assume that I can get my own house in ten years time. Hopefully!

Newspaper Article

WALT: Write an article about Jump Rope For Heart to be published to the local newspaper.

Glen Innes School joining Jump Rope for Heart

by Sajiha Askar

Glen Innes School were doing their Jump Rope for Heart at Glen Innes Centre on the 27th of June 2013. Glen Innes School is very close to Glen Innes Shopping Centre, so they walked down there to show off their skipping routines and also entertain the shoppers.

“WOW”. That’s what all the people in GI centre said. Even the parents and the shopkeepers who were working there. They just could not wait to see the children performing.

Glen Innes School had been practising their skipping routines since the beginning of the term. They had all been waiting for this day patiently. All the classes were looking forward to perform.

When they all arrived there, some students had excited faces where the other students had such nervous faces. All the students had a turn to skip, hop, jump and have extremely fun with each other. It started from Room 1 all the way to Room 12. There were different routines, styles and a variety of music played. They all did great no matter what age they were.

A really helpful company, called South Pacific Loans provided the school with skipping ropes, flags and banners. This is not the first time they have been helping the school.  They have done this for a number of years.

Even some of the parents had a turn to skip with their children. That was a really fun competition for the parents. The parent who skipped the longest won a milkshake voucher from one of the shops in Glen Innes Centre. A very healthy mother got the prize. She was really proud of herself.

At the end, everyone enjoyed and looking forward for another day like this next year.

 Sumdog
Sumdog is an online game that most people love to play. This game teaches me a lot of stuff like, times tables, fractions, halves and lots more.  There are so many games to choose from but Dress down is my favourite game.
I was checking how well I know my 12 times table and I got all the questions correct.  At the end you can vote for anyone (except yourself) who you think dressed the best. Isn't that fun?

What causes the Seasons?

What causes the Seasons?

Do you know how many Seasons there are? Do you know anything about Seasons? Well I do. I know a lot but it would take me so long to write everything. So I will just tell you some of them.

First of all, there are four Seasons, Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring.  In Summer it is hot and this is the season when everyone is on holiday and having fun. In Autumn, it starts to get colder and leaves start to fall from trees. Finally Winter. In Winter, it is very cold and all the trees are bare. Everyone is at home drinking hot chocolate and sleeping. Then Spring. In Spring, it starts to get warm and  trees start to grow leaves. Then the season cycle starts all over again.

What causes the Seasons? The Seasons are caused by the tilt of the Earth’s rotational axis away or toward the sun as it travels through its year-long path around the sun.

Earth rotates on its axis as it orbits the Sun, but the axis is always pointing the same direction.

We have hot summers and cold winters because of the tilt of the Earth’s rotation.

At different times of the year, the sun's rays hit different parts of the globe more directly. This means that when one half of Earth is having Summer, the other half will be having Winter. It also means that when one half of Earth is having Autumn, the other will be having Spring.

The angle of the Earth's axis tilts the Northern Hemisphere towards the sun during the summer.

We have Seasons because the Earth is tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees. This means the Earth is always pointing to one side of the sun as it goes around the Sun.

So that’s all I know about Seasons. And I hope you liked my report. Maybe next time I can tell you more about Seasons.

All about Astronomy

Report about astronomy
Did you know that astronomy is the branch of science that deals with celestial objects? ( such as moons, planets, stars, nebulae, and galaxies.)  I know a lot of facts and information about astronomy but I will just tell you some of them.

The Solar System
First of all, the Solar System is made up of the Sun, eight planets, five dwarf planets, over one hundred and sixty moons, half a million asteroids and  more than three thousand comets, gas and dust.
Do you know how old is the Solar System? Well I know, the Solar System is is more than 4.6  billion years old. It is very old.

The Sun
The Sun is a ball of very hot, burning gases.Scientists say that our Sun is a green Star.  Did you also know that the light from the Sun takes approximately 8 minutes to reach
Earth. And last of all,the Sun's core can reach 10 to 22.5 million°F.

The Moon
Did you know that from Earth, we always see the same side of the Moon?  This is because the other half is always hidden. The moon always rises in the east and sets in the west.  There is also  no wind or weather on the moon. Isn’t that boring?

Stars
A Star is a massive luminous sphere of plasma held together by gravity. It has hydrogen and helium gas inside. Every Star is 100 to 200 times larger and brighter than our Sun. Did you also know that Stars are black bodies? A black body is an object that absorbs 100 percent of all electromagnetic radiation (that is, light, radio waves and so on) that falls on it.

Comets
Do you know what is a Comet? Well I know. A comet is an icy small Solar System body. Comets are members of our Solar System. Comet's tail is its most distinctive feature. There are two types of comet tails: dust and gas.

Asteroids
Asteroids are minor planets (small Solar System bodies and dwarf planets) that are not comets, especially those of the inner Solar Systems. They have also been called planetoids, especially the larger ones. Asteroids are made of different minerals and substances.

Solar Eclipse
An eclipse is when the moon passes in front of the Sun casting a shadow on the Earth. (this is also known as a occultation) A total Solar Eclipse only happens every 1 and a half years. There are also 2 and 5 Solar eclipses each year. Last of all, the moon moves across the Sun at 2,250 km per hour.

Galaxies
A galaxy is a massive, gravitationally bound system consisting of Stars.

So that’s all I know about astronomy and I hoped you liked it. Maybe I can tell you more about astronomy next time.
